Public Transport in Vienna

Public transport in Vienna is operated by Wiener Linien, where you can find additional information concerning time tables, tickets and connections. A single fare in the core network costs € 2,20. You can also buy 24h, 48h or 72h tickets. If you are using a smartphone, the app Qando may be helpful in getting information concerning connections.

Tickets can be purchased online, at ticket offices located at the major metro (U-Bahn) stations or at ticket machines, which you can find at any metro (U-Bahn) station.

Note, the airport is NOT in the core network.


 

Getting to the city centre from the Airport

The Vienna International Airport is located about 18 km from the city centre of Vienna. 

By Taxi

The most comfortable and – depending on the time of day – probably quickest way is by taxi. With prices starting at 25 Euro, this is the most expensive means of transport. In addition, the taxi has to be reserved to get the special airport tarif. Prices usually include 1-2 persons and 2 pieces of luggage per person (plus hand luggage). You'll find taxis waiting outside the arrival and depature halls. Without major traffic jams, it takes about 30 min to get into the city centre. The typical route is via A4 (Ostautobahn) and Landesstraße B9 (Pressburger Straße).

By Public Transport

Public transport in Vienna is operated by Wiener Linien, where you can find additional information concerning time tables, tickets and connections. Alternatively, you can use the smartphone app Qando.

  • S7 via Vienna City Centre (S-Bahn / Expresstrain)

As far as price is concerned, the S7 is the cheapest mode of transport at just 3,90 Euro. This is a single fare to any destination in the core zone of the Vienna transport system, allowing you to connect to the underground system without additional cost.

Tickets can be bought online from the ÖBB. There is a also a ÖBB ticket office in the arrival hall of Terminal 3 and numerous (red) ticket machines just before you get to the platform.

Intervall: every 30 min

Travel time: 25 min (to Wien-Mitte)

Price: € 3,90  (one way ticket)

  • CAT (City Airport Train)

With a journey time of only 16 minutes the City Airport Train is the quickest way to get to the centre of Vienna. Prices for the CAT is 11 Euro if the ticket is bought online.

The ticket is not valid on the remaining public transport network. You can buy tickets online. There is also a CAT ticket office in the arrival hall of Terminal 3, numerous (green) ticket machines just before you get to the platform.

Intervall: every 30 min

Travel time: 16 min (to Wien-Mitte)

Price: € 11,00  (one way ticket), € 17,00 (return ticket)

  • Vienna Airportlines bus

There are 3 different lines with several stops in the city. For more information on ticketing and timetable.

The ticket is not valid on the remaining public transport network. You can buy tickets online or there are ticket machines at the airport (bus gates 7 and 8).

Price for all lines: € 8,00 (one way ticket), € 13,00 (return ticket)

   


 

Getting to the city centre from the major train stations

There are 4 major train stations in Vienna. For arrivals and departures, check the electronic timetable at the ÖBB Reiseportal.

  • Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Main Station)

Am Hauptbahnhof, 1100 Wien 

All major long-distance trains stop at Vienna Main Station ("Wien Hauptbahnhof").

  • tram line D has been extended by one station to the eastern exit ("Hauptbahnhof Ost" terminus)
  • the U1 metro station "Südtiroler Platz" has been renamed "Südtiroler Platz – Hauptbahnhof"
  • the express train station "Südtiroler Platz" is now called "Hauptbahnhof Wien", the express train station "Südbahnhof" is now called "Quartier Belvedere"
  • transfers to tramlines O and 18 as well as to bus lines 13A and 69A are now wheelchair accessible

 

  • Wien Westbahnhof

Europaplatz 2, 1150 Wien

Wien Westbahnhof is a terminal station for trains arriving from Western Europe and Western Austria.

The airport bus operated by Vienna AirportLines continues to stop on Europaplatz, in front of the station building.

  • tram lines 5,6,9,18,52,58 have stops right outside the main entrance on the opposite side of the street (Europaplatz)

 

  • Bahnhof Wien Meidling

Regional as well as long-distance trains stop here. Ideal connections to the city center transport network are guaranteed by subway and tram as well as various bus lines, express trains and the local Vienna-Baden railway. 

The direct airport bus operated by Vienna AirportLines stops at Vienna-Meidling station, in Dörflerstrasse.

  • Bahnhof Wien Mitte

Landstraßer Hauptstraße 1c, 1030 Wien

The extremely busy station (approx. 650 trains and 268,000 passengers per day) near the city center is one of the most important transport hubs in the city. Wien Mitte is the intersection for two subway lines (U3 and U4), five express train lines, including the airport express train S7, tram line O and bus line 74A, which enable rapid onward journeys. In addition to check-in counters for numerous airlines, the station also houses the terminal for the airport express train City Airport Train CAT
